Noam Shemtov, Professor of Intellectual Property and Technology Law, has been invited to provide expert opinion at the UK Music AI Inquiry before the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on UK Music.
The inquiry aims to delve into the positive applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the music sector while also examining potential threats it may pose.
As the music industry continues to evolve in the digital age, the integration of AI technologies presents both opportunities and challenges. Noam Shemtov's extensive expertise in intellectual property law, particularly concerning AI and its implications for creative industries, uniquely positions him to offer invaluable insights during this critical inquiry.
"It's an honour to be invited to participate in the UK Music AI Inquiry," said Noam Shemtov. "This inquiry is highly important and timely. After the UK chose not to follow on with its initial plan to introduce a blanket copyright exception that would have allowed AI companies to use creative content they have not sought permission to use (without the option for creators to opt out), and after the efforts to reach a voluntary agreement between rightsholders and AI firms have failed in the beginning of the month (February 2024), the ball is back at the court of the UK legislature. Hence, a key aim of the inquiry is recommending practical legislative solutions for the government going forward in this regard. I am delighted to be part of this process.”
The inquiry, hosted by the APPG on UK Music, will bring together leading experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore various facets of AI in the music industry. Topics of discussion will include AI's role in music creation, distribution, copyright enforcement, and its broader implications for the future of the industry.
