At the Mile End Institute's final event of 2023, we are delighted to be joined by the former Conservative MP and Lord Chancellor, David Gauke, who will be in conversation with Professor Tim Bale about his new book, The Case for the Centre Right.

In recent years, as the authors of this major important collection of essays argue, the landscape of British politics has fundamentally changed. The Conservative Party in particular has undergone a profound transformation. Centre-right values that steered British politics for decades - internationalism, respect for the rule of law, fiscal responsibility, belief in our institutions - were cast aside in the wake of the Brexit referendum to the detriment of the UK's prosperity, electoral trust, and the long-term fortunes of the Conservative Party.

In this event, we are delighted to be joined by the former Conservative MP and Lord Chancellor, David Gauke, to talk about his new book, The Case for the Centre Right. Published in September 2023, this collection of essays features contributions from Michael Heseltine, Rory Stewart, and Amber Rudd, and has been described as a 'classic indictment of the deceptions of populism' by the former Prime Minister, Sir John Major.

We will also be joined by Andrew, Lord Cooper of Windrush, who served as Director of Strategy at Number 10 from 2011 to 2013. They will be in conversation with Professor Tim Bale, whose latest book The Conservative Party After Brexit was launched at the Mile End Institute and was published to academic and critical acclaim earlier this year.

This event will be held in the Peston Lecture Theatre in the Graduate Centre at Queen Mary University of London, which is number 18 on this map of the Mile End campus. It is open to all. Doors will open at 6.30pm and we aim to start at 6.45pm sharp.
