Professor Astrid Köhler, Dr. Phil

Profile

Astrid Köhler teaches courses on German literature and culture from the 18th century to the present day, as well as comparative literature and literary translation from English into German. She is convenor of the Literature Section of the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations. Her research interests are divided between two broad fields: the Cultural History of late 18th & 19th Century Europe on the one hand, and contemporary German Literature on the other. With regard to the former, she has published widely on salons and other forms of sociability in the Age of Goethe as well as on the public rituals and festivities, literary journals and prose fiction of the period, and translated James Bowman’s book *The Fortune Hunter. A German Prince in Regency England* into German (https://www.die-andere-bibliothek.de/Originalausgaben/Ein-Gluecksritter::679.html).  She is currently engaged in an interdisciplinary research project on the history of European Spas.  

As to the latter, she has published various journal articles, a monograph on East German authors before and after German Re-Unification, *Brückenschläge*, in 2007 (https://digi20.digitale-sammlungen.de/de/fs1/object/display/bsb00082327_00011.html), and an intellectual biography of the author Klaus Schlesinger in 2011 (https://www.perlentaucher.de/buch/astrid-koehler/klaus-schlesinger.html). Together with Robert Gillett, she produced the historical-critical edition of Uwe Johnson’s 1959 novel *Mutmassungen über Jakob* (https://www.suhrkamp.de/buecher/werkausgabe-uwe_johnson_42702.html) and an edition of the complete poems of Adolf Endler (https://www.wallstein-verlag.de/9783835319493-die-gedichte.html).   

Köhler is an honorary secretary of the English Goethe Society (https://www.englishgoethesociety.org/) and co-editor of its academic journal PEGS (https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/ypeg20/current). 

Research 

From May 2019 to December 2022 Astrid Köhler is engaged in the HERA (http://heranet.info/)  funded project The European Spa as a Transnational Public Space and Social Metaphor (https://www.theeuropeanspa.eu/) as one of its four Principal Investigators.    

The project brings together historians, cultural historians and literary scholars from five countries and rethinks the spa (*Kurbad, kuuroord, station thermale, terme, минеральный источник*,….) as a core concept and object of European debate. It investigates the ways in which European spas, with their characteristic institutions such as the *Kurhaus*, promenade, grand hotel and casino, developed into transnational public spaces and functioned as stages for the negotiation of political, social and cultural issues of European relevance. Apart from the transnational dimension, the project is unique in covering the whole of Europe, including the previously marginalised fringes, and extending its historical perspective beyond the perceived heyday of European spa culture to include the 20th and early 21st centuries.    

We work with a number of non-academic partners from across the continent, comprising spa museums and archives, spa associations, municipal institutions as well as cultural initiatives.
