My thesis analyses Arabic subtitles found on SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand)  services and the extent to which they impose western norms when translating extralinguistic cultural references and sensitive language into Arabic. The study will shed light on the pivotal role that the global reach of US-distributed SVOD services play in audio-visual translation today and their possible implications on identity, behaviour, and culture.
