Professor Stephanie Marshall is Vice Principal (Education) at Queen Mary University of London.
As Vice-Principal she led the development of the Education and Student Success Enabling Plan to support Queen Mary’s 2030 Strategy: “Opening the Doors of Opportunity”. Working closely with the network of Directors of Education, the roll out of the strategy had a clear focus on diversity, inclusivity and success. Since February 2020, Stephanie has led Queen Mary’s approach to co-creating a blended and mixed-mode education, and is continuing to ensure each and every student is able to benefit from our approach.
Stephanie was previously Chief Executive Officer of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) from 2013 to 2018, positioning the HEA as a global leader in teaching excellence. At the HEA, she led its transformation from a government-funded organisation to become a highly successful, sustainable organisation with extensive global reach and membership spanning 45 countries worldwide. During this time, she launched the ‘Global Teaching Excellence Award’ in partnership with THE.
Stephanie continues to be much sought after to present keynotes at global conferences including (in 2018) CAULLT in Australia (network of PVCs teaching and learning), AMEE in Finland (2018), and AMSE in Poland (2019) and the recent World Universities Summit on progressing the sustainable development goals during the pandemic. More recently, she has shared Queen Mary’s experience of mixed-mode education via the HEPI blog and 2021 Annual Policy Briefing Day. She has been a panel member on the German Excellenz Initiative, and has twice been the chair of the Norwegian Centres for Excellence Initiative. She has continued to support the roll out of the Norwegian Initiative in terms of workshops on Evaluation and Impact and Leadership and Management of Change. Most recently, she has supported the work of the WHO Academy’s Quality and Standards Evaluation and Impact group and was appointed to the London Higher AccessHE Steering Group.
Stephanie has a global reputation for developing and promoting academic leadership and learning. She is passionate about higher education enabling an inclusive society which supports an absolute commitment to equality, diversity and the public good.
Stephanie is the author of approximately one hundred articles, book chapters and books, all focused on international comparisons.
