Overview

Explore the relationship between the human and natural environment to help build a sustainable future for us all.

Interested in looking after our planet for future generations? From conserving biodiversity for sustainable development to tackling air pollution and flooding, you’ll be focused on finding solutions to the planet’s urgent problems.

Taught collaboratively between the School of Geography and the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences, you’ll have the unique opportunity to extend your interests in biology, ecology, and evolution. And you’ll apply your new knowledge to develop an understanding of the biological, physical, and chemical processes that drive change in the Earth’s system.

Surrounded by experts at every step

You’ll be driven to create a positive impact by our expert research-focused academics. Imagine being taught by leaders who’ve had research included in groundbreaking climate change reports, and others who’ve featured on BBC Panorama. Or how about being taught by academics who’ve worked inside government shaping UK climate policy?

After developing skills in our labs using our state-of-the-art instrumentation and modelling methods, you’ll have opportunities to apply your learnings during field trips. You could be exploring ecological interactions in Somerset. Or perhaps travelling to South Africa to study the savannah ecosystems.

All of this will prepare you for a range of careers. From contaminated land assessment to sustainable natural resource management, and conservation to geospatial analysis – where will this course take you?

Professional recognition

This programme is accredited by the Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education (part of the Institution of Environmental Sciences).

Testimonial

What inspired my decision to study at Queen Mary was the strong emphasis on fieldwork. My trip to the Cairngorms in Scotland stands out as a particularly memorable and immersive learning experience. Its high mountains, distinctive tors, and tundra vegetation provided an unparalleled setting for our fieldwork. The experience of being surrounded by nothing but white snow and successfully completing our research left a profound impact on me.

Teaching

Teaching and learning

On average, you can expect to spend eight to 12 hours per week in a combination of lectures, tutorials, supervisions, seminars, workshops and practical classes.

For every hour of classes, expect to do a further two to four hours of independent study.

Fieldwork is central to all our programmes and takes place in London, the UK and overseas. Find out more about our field classes and how they help you apply your studies to real-world contexts.

All students have an academic advisor that they meet with regularly across each semester to review their studies and to check-in on their well-being. Read more about the advice and support services available to students in the School of Geography.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and examination. Coursework may include extended essays, short reports, posters, oral presentations and group work.

Students must also complete a final-year independent study project of 10,000 words, based on an original study of their choice.
