Climate Action Week 2024

Climate Action Week, formerly Green Week, is a chance to learn about sustainability and how to take meaningful steps towards a greener future. Join the range of events across Queen Mary dedicated to climate action.

All events are open to staff, students, and the general public. See what's happening on each day: 

Monday 19th February

10:30 to 17:00 - Wick Thrift Store

Blomeley 1 & 2, Students' Union Hub, Mile End Campus

Dive into sustainable style with our Climate Action Week Thrift-Shop Pop-Up featuring "Wick Thrift Shop"! Queen Mary students and staff enjoy an exclusive 20% discount on all the curated thrifted treasures. No sign up needed, just turn up on the day.

12:00 to 14:00 - Big Green Canal Clean

Canalside, next to Residential Life Reception, Mile End Campus (meeting at 11:55 outside the Students' Union Hub)

It's time to get outdoorsy and make a difference while having a blast. We're talking litter picking, vegetation management, and we'll clean up the canal as well. Did we mention free soup too?

12:00 to 14:00 - Vegetarian Soup

The Huts, Canalside, Mile End Campus

Our catering team is thrilled to serve up a delicious bowl of eco-friendly goodness at our Climate Action Week event - introducing our Sustainable Veggie Soup! Get a bowl for free if you're taking part in our Big Green Canal Clean, or otherwise purchase one from the Canalside Huts.

14:00 to 16:00 - Climate Action Research with Cabinet Cultures

The Old Library, Garrod Building, Whitechapel Campus

Dive into the fascinating world of Cabinet Cultures; a cross-industry research partnership launched in 2023 reshaping our relationship with houseplants! Build greenhouse cabinets with the Queen Mary team, learn a new skill and growing method, and contribute to groundbreaking research on our relationships with plants.

Tuesday 20th February

11:00 to 15:00 - Recycle Your Cycle

Library Square, Mile End Campus

Grab yourself a bargain from the refurbished bicycle specialists, Recycle Your Cycle! Their partner charities rescue abandoned bicycles, then train prisoners and disadvantaged groups to refurbish them. This gives them valuable technical skills that they can use in the workplace. No sign up needed, just turn up on the day.

16:00 to 17:30 - "Love Your Future" Careers Panel

Hear from speakers who have found ways to embed their values into their careers, whether that's as an active influencer for positive change within a corporate business, creating a portfolio of work that balances income and impact, or making it work financially working in the public sector or charity world.

10:00 to 19:00 - London Student Sustainability Conference

Imperial College London

Students, staff and members of the public are invited to attend the 2024 London Student Sustainability Conference. Student-led, the conference show-cases research and projects created by students through presentations and posters.

15:00 to 17:00 - Stave Hill Ecological Park Visit

Stave Hill Ecological Park

The Students with Disabilities society will be taking a relaxing accessible walk/wheelchair through the exciting Stave Hill Ecological Park. We’ll see the great work that has been done to convert this former dock to the wildlife haven it is now. No sign-up needed, just turn up on the day.

15:00 to 17:00 - Sustainability in Academic Research Workshop (CANCELLED)

Empire House, Whitechapel Campus

This workshop goes beyond the conventional, inviting participants to actively integrate sustainability concepts into their research methodologies. From innovative research tools to influential background choices, we're diving into the diverse dimensions of incorporating sustainability seamlessly into academic work. Drawing inspiration from shared insights and additional resources provided, participants can customise their sustainability strategy based on their research background, personal circumstances, and requirements.

10:00 to 12:00 - ‘Behind the Scenes’ Energy Tour

Meeting in Library Sqaure

Unveil the power behind our campus at the "Behind the Scenes" Energy Facilities Tour during Climate Action Week! Join our Sustainability and Energy Manager and the Carbon Numbers Team for an exclusive journey into the unseen corners of sustainability.

12:00 to 13:30 - Putting Sustainability Skills into Action

Join this workshop about entrepreneurship in sustainability at our Skills Award Session. You will hear from entrepreneurs, apply the lean canvas model, and tackle a real-life campus sustainability challenge. Let's turn ideas into action!

12:00 to 14:00 - Bywaters Stall

Library Square, Mile End Campus

Meet the family-owned waste-management company that takes Queen Mary's rubbish! They have a long-standing commitment to sustainability with London's largest materials recovery facility powered by London's largest solar p.v. retrofit. No sign up needed, just turn up on the day.

14:00 to 16:30 - Litter Pick Scavenger Hunt

Meeting outside the Students' Union Hub, Mile End Campus

Explore local gems like Victoria Park pagoda and Mile End Park’s green bridge as you embark on a litter-picking adventure hosted by Sober Socials, Biology Society, and Sustain@BL. Teams of at least 3 will follow a curated route, collecting litter and decoding clues at key locations. It's not just a clean-up; it's a competition! Check off items on your litter checklist, and the winning team takes home a fantastic prize. Bundle up, bring your friends, and let's make our community sparkle.

15:00 to 16:00 - Plant and Grow Your Own Herbs

Zero Waste / Community Shop, Mile End Campus

Elevate your study break! Join our herb planting workshop at Queen Mary's Zero Waste Shop. Choose from Parsley, Coriander, or Sorrel, and nurture your own herbs for free.

Friday 23rd February

15:00 to 16:30 - Darning and Patching Workshop: Fast Fashion Therapy

Blomeley 1 & 2, Students' Union Hub, Mile End Campus

Discover the satisfaction of repairing your wardrobe sustainably using practical techniques to mend and up-cycle your clothes. This hands-on workshop covers 'visible mending' that you can continue at home with hand sewing. All materials and equipment are provided - just bring your enthusiasm for positive change.
