Sustainability Team

We strive to create systemic change within and beyond Queen Mary. To achieve our ambitions, climate and sustainability action is embedded across Queen Mary, steered by a central sustainability team. 

This is supported by colleagues across our faculties and directorates, particularly our Staff Sustainability Champions and colleagues within the Directorate of Estates & Facilities who enable operational change. 

Queen Mary’s Sustainability Team: 

  • Sara Tomé  Head of Environmental Sustainability • Leads the Sustainability Team and the University’s estate-wide sustainability programmes/initiatives. 
  • Oluwatobi Ajala • Sustainability and Energy Manager • Responsible for overall energy management across the estate and the delivery of projects to increase energy efficiency.
  • Jenna-Marie Smallwood • Sustainability and Environment Manager • Leads the ongoing management of ISO 14001-certified EMS and supports estate-wide sustainability programmes/initiatives.
  • Zoe Sturgess Sustainability Coordinator (Student's Union) • Leads on student engagement and awareness-building around environmental sustainability through behaviour change initiatives and events.
  • Miranda Nicklin Sustainability Officer • Supports a range of sustainability initiatives around waste and resource management, staff and student engagement, and responsible resource use.
  • Matt Owen (interim) • Decarbonisation Manager • Supports the strategic direction of the University’s decarbonisation plans and supports carbon reduction projects.

Queen Mary’s senior sustainability sponsors:  

  • Philippa Lloyd Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships) • Philippa is a member of the Senior Executive Team and the Sustainability Lead for the University. She is the Chair of the Sustainability Committee and is responsible for incorporating sustainability into the University’s overarching strategy.
  • Ian McManus Director of Estates and Facilities & Capital Development • Ian is the Vice Chair of the Sustainability Committee and oversees the delivery of environmental sustainability objectives across the estates and facilities directorate.  

 

In addition to the above individuals, several other members of staff support environmental sustainability at Queen Mary including:

  • Stephen Thurlbourn (interim) • Energy Manager • Supports the implementation of energy-saving measures and management of utilities.
  • Timothy Lee • Technical Manager (Authorising Engineer), Estates and Facilities Directorate • Oversees the design and delivery of energy-saving projects.
  • Fraser Burt • Executive Officer (Policy & Strategic Partnerships) • Supports Philippa Lloyd in delivering environmental sustainability responsibilities at a Senior Management level.
  • Mohammed Akbar Zero Waste & Community Shop Manager • Manges the Zero Waste Shop and supports engagement initiatives.
  • Sarah Gifford • Civic Engagement Lead • Collaborates on sustainability initiatives around Civic and Public Engagement.
  • Stephanie Fuller • Academic Practice Taught Programmes Manager • Supports Education for Sustainable Development.
  • Martin Sharp • Data Analyst, Wolfson Institute of Population Health • Chair of Staff Sustainability Champions.
