New paper published: Asthma patients discussing their experiences with breathing patterns and laryngeal disorders within a UK-based online asthma community

Published:

This study highlights unmet needs among patients suffering from Breathing Pattern Disorder (BPD) and Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO), which affect approximately 1/3 to 1/5 of all asthma patients. Participants expressed frustration with the 'one-size-fits-all' approach to diagnosis and were conscious of overusing salbutamol due to its limited effect on their symptoms. It is imperative to provide additional education and training for clinicians in the diagnosis and management of BPD and ILO, especially in general practice.

Expanding the availability of appropriate management options, such as respiratory physiotherapy and speech and language therapy, could significantly enhance the care of patients with BPD and ILO. The online asthma community proved to be a valuable resource, with qualitative evidence indicating that it prompted changes in patients' actions and behaviors. Recognising their clear value to patients, there is potential benefit in further developing online resources for BPD and ILO and encouraging engagement within the online asthma community."
