Online forum about asthma

The online health forum about asthma is a peer-to-peer forum managed by the charity Asthma + Lung UK. It has approximately 20,000 registered and 2000 active users (users who regularly use the forum). The main purpose of the forum is to offer and receive peer-to-peer support (support to/from people experiencing similar health concerns). The forum is moderated by specialist respiratory nurses to ensure that online discussions are safe and respectful. The forum may be used as much or as little as the user wishes – basically whenever needed. As a participant in the intervention group in this trial, some of the reasons for visiting the forum are as follows (not exhaustive!):

  • To read other users’ questions and posts about various topics related to asthma management and general health and well-being, and add a response if you want to.
  • To share and discuss different perspectives and what has worked for others, helping you make the most of your consultations and more informed decisions with your doctor.
  • To post your own questions about asthma-related topics, such as, symptoms and management, tests and medical advice, medications, and any other associated health problems.
  • To send private messages to other users, which are only seen by the recipient (not publicly posted), for example, to offer advice or ask a sensitive question.
  • To find information, advice and tips related to asthma management, posted by Asthma & Lung UK. You can also opt in to receive regular email notifications about any new information posted.
  • To participate in polls posted by Asthma & Lung UK and discussions around these topics.
