Professor Colin Bailey CBE

Dear Graduate,

I am proud to share with you, as a member of our valued alumni community, some of the highlights from the past 12 months as Queen Mary continues to go from strength to strength.

We recently carried out a mid-point review of our 2030 Strategy and this confirmed that we have cemented our unique position in combining excellence in research, innovation and education with an unrivalled commitment to social mobility and justice.

Our student applications have increased by 75% over the last five years, highlighting the extensive competition to secure a place at Queen Mary and to follow in your footsteps. Our staff continue to attract competitive research funding, which has increased by 42%, as we continue to deliver world-leading research that is having a positive impact on people’s lives. We now have 33,000 students studying at Queen Mary, either on one of our nine locations in London, one of our four locations in China, on our Malta campus, or in Paris.

Queen Mary has also come top again in this year’s UK assessment of Knowledge Exchange, based on our excellence in research and innovation, our passion for sharing knowledge, ideas and experience, and our commitment to tackling society’s biggest challenges and transforming lives through our research and education, locally, nationally and globally.

Queen Mary has also been assessed as ‘Outstanding’ for its education by the UK regulator Ofsted, following an intensive on-campus education review by seven independent inspectors over four days. This independent review confirms the world-leading education that is delivered at our University and shows why Queen Mary is becoming so popular.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous financial support and promotion of the University from our alumni community. You all play such an important role in the success and future of your University, and I’m sure you are proud of everything Queen Mary continues to achieve and its strong global reputation for excellence.

So, as 2024 draws to a close, I wish you and your loved ones happiness and good health for the year ahead. Please do stay in touch and I hope to be able to meet many of you soon.

With kind regards,

Professor Colin Bailey CBE, FREng, BEng, PhD, CEng, FICE, FIStructE, MIFireE
