Queen Mary alumni recognised in King’s Birthday Honours List 2024

Congratulations to members of our alumni community who have been recognised in the latest King’s Birthday Honours List. The focus of the 2024 List, which was published on Friday 14 June as part of the King’s Official Birthday celebrations, is on individuals who are making a significant impact on the lives of people across the UK and their local communities.

Our alumni recipients represent outstanding contributions to public life, from healthcare and medical research to environmental policymaking and social enterprise.

  • Amira Amzour OBE (Pharmaceutical Chemistry MSc, 2015, Deputy Director, Environment Bill, Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), for services to environmental legislation.

  • Shirley Biro BEM (Genetics BSc, 1979), Governor at East London NHS Trust, for services to the community in the London Borough of Newham.

  • Professor Jamshed Bomanji OBE (Nuclear Medicine MSc, PhD, 1987), Head of the Clinical Department, Institute of Nuclear Medicine at UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, for services to the NHS and to global nuclear medicine.

  • Professor Paul Griffiths MBE (Medicine MBBS, 1977), Emeritus Professor of Virology at University College London, for services to virology.

  • Dr Ian Llewellyn MBE (Chemistry BSc, 1978; PhD, 1984), Head of Energy Engineering at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, for services to net zero innovation.

  • Professor Mervyn Singer OBE (Medicine MBBS, 1981), Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at UCL and Director of the Bloomsbury Institute of Intensive Care Medicine, for services to intensive care.

  • Nick Temple OBE (Literature, Culture and Modernity MA, 2000), Chief Executive Officer of the Social Investment Business, for services to social enterprise.

  • Professor Jonathan Weber CBE (Medicine MBBS, 1979), Director of the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre and former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, for services to global medical science.

  • Professor Dame Moira Whyte DBE (Medicine MBBS, 1984), Sir John Crofton Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, for services to medical research.

In addition, author, historian and broadcaster, Dr Tracy Borman OBE, Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust, Joint Chief Curator of the Historic Royal Palaces and Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, received an OBE for services to heritage. Dr Borman was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Queen Mary in 2020.
