Biomaterial-Mediated Epicardial Placement of Stem cells for Cardiac Repair

This project investigates the use of peptide-based hydrogels to encapsulate and deliver mesenchymal stem cells to damaged myocardium to promote cardiac repair. The viability and ability of mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into cardiomyocites is studied. This includes the control of the composition of the hydrogels, with cell adhesive, growth factor signaling and enzyme degradable peptides. Finally, the ability of the cell-loaded hydrogels to promote cardiac repair will be tested in vivo. This project is collaborative, with the lab of Prof. Ken Suzuki, William Harvey Research Institute.
