National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2022

National Hate Crime Awareness Week (NHCAW) ran from 8^th – 15^th October in 2022. This was a national week of action to encourage local authorities, key partners and communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle local hate crime issues.

In 2022, National Hate Crime Awareness highlighted the #WeStandTogether and stood in solidarity with the victims of Racist hate crime. You can find out more about this week on the National Hate Crime Awareness website or on their Twitter.  

Queen Mary is committed to creating an environment for work and study where staff and students are treated with dignity and respect, and where all forms of bullying and harassment and hate crime are not tolerated. We want to ensure that our community, at each of our campuses, is free from all forms of prejudice, discrimination, harassment and bullying. 

At Queen Mary we hosted an information stall in Library Square, Mile End on the 10^th October 2022 from 11am-2pm to share information about reporting all forms of Hate Crime and the support available for victims within Queen Mary and from external organisations.

What is a hate crime?

Hate crimes are any crimes targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice. These might be due to:

• disability
• race or ethnicity
• religion or belief
• sexual orientation
• transgender identity

Hate crimes can be committed against a person or property.  Anyone could be a victim of a hate crime even if they aren’t a member of the group that the hostility is targeted at.

What is a hate incident?

Hate Incidents can feel like crimes to those who suffer them and often escalate to actual crimes or create tensions in a community.

Activities that took place in NHCAW 2022

(please note that some events listed below are organised by external organisations):  

• 8^th October - Service of Remembrance at St Paul’s Cathedral, organised by National Hate Crime Awareness. 
• 10^th October – Queen Mary Information Stall for NHCAW. Library Square, Mile End. 11am-2pm. 
• 12^th October – Tower Hamlets Peace Walk – Altab Ali Park, organised by Tower Hamlets Council.  
• 13^th October – Hate Crime Awareness Training for QM staff – If you are a member of staff who wishes to attend please register here.
