Marking ‘Wear Red Day’ as part of Show Racism The Red Card

Friday 21^st October 2022

This year at QMUL, we will be marking Wear Red Day by flying red flags at the Queens’ Building and the Garrod Building. In addition to this, badges to support ‘Wear Red Day’ will be available to collect at Dept W, the Queens’ Building and the Garrod Building. Why not grab one of these or catch a photo of the flag flying at QMUL! Keep an eye out for where they will be!

Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity. To this day SRtRC continues to utilise the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society and has also expanded into other sports. The majority of the campaign’s work involves the delivery of educational workshops to young people and adults in schools, workplaces and at events held in football stadiums. Across the UK, SRtRC provides educational sessions to more than 50,000 individuals per year.  In addition to the direct education of young people and adults, SRtRC produces educational resources, to challenge misconceptions, stereotypes and negative attitudes in society.

• How? On your compatible Android phone or iPhone, open the built-in camera app. Point the camera at the QR code. Tap the banner that appears on your Android phone or tablet.
• Why? QR codes on key buildings around Mile End and Whitechapel campus that educate students, staff and local friends on key facts/impactful figures in Black History and culture! Each person/fact will be relevant to each building.

NHS Blood Donors

Thursday 27^th October 2022

Queen Mary Students’ Union will be running a stall/drop in session with the NHS to discuss the important of black donors. Information will be provided and this is a great opportunity to get booked in to donate blood. This is part of supporting a national campaign to increase Black blood donors. This is an urgent priority for NHS Blood and Transplant.

• Did you know? Black donors are ten times more likely to have the Ro and B positive blood types urgently needed to treat the 15,000 people in the UK suffering from sickle cell disease. Sickle cell is a painful and debilitating condition which is particularly prevalent in people with an African or Caribbean background.

This will take place at Library Square, Mile End Campus, from 10am-3pm

National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2022 - Training for Queen Mary Staff

As part of National Hate Crime Awareness week 2022, we are offering a training session open to all staff at Queen Mary on Hate Crime Awareness.

This training will be delivered online by Tower Hamlets Hate Crime Projects Officer, Benedicta Dikeocha. It is open to all staff at Queen Mary.

The 2 hour training will:

• Provide participants with working definition what Hate Crime is
• Equip participants with the necessary knowledge and understanding to recognise different forms of Hate Crime
• Increase participant’s understanding of the impact of hate crime on individuals and communities
• Support/encourage the reporting of hate incidents by being able to refer to appropriate services.

Queen Mary staff can sign up for the training via Eventbrite.
