Profile
I graduated in medicine from Newcastle University in 2009 with distinction before undertaking my basic surgical training and specialty training in general surgery in North East London. I completed a PhD in Trauma Sciences at Queen Mary University of London in 2019, and was subsequently appointed as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer alongside my higher surgical training, during which I was awarded the Apothecaries Prize in 2022, and the Queen Mary University of London Life Sciences Image Award for my work titled 'White Blood Cells in Colour'. I completed a subspecialty training interface group (TIG) fellowship in Major Trauma and Resuscitative Surgery prior to being appointed to my current position as Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon. In 2024, I was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Trust Early Career Award to investigate how changes in platelet biology influence the development of post-injury organ failure.
Teaching
I am a module tutor and dissertation supervisor on the Online MSc Trauma Sciences.
Research
Research Interests:
My primary research focus is on post-injury changes in platelet biology, and how these relate to trauma-induced coagulopathy and organ dysfunction. I have a particular interest in understanding the mechanisms by which platelets respond to damage signals, and how platelet responses to damage influence subsequent immune responses. I am a principal investigator on the Activation of Coagulation and Inflammation in Trauma (ACIT) study, our platform prospective observational study that has recruited over 2,500 patients. I am also a founding member of the National Trauma Research and Innovation Collaborative (NaTRIC) and a member of the International Trauma Research Network (INTRN).
