Rebecca Rickwood

Read Rebecca's story of how she came to set up the Gement Group of Companies, including Gement GO!, Gement Recruit, and Gement Connect.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and describe your current business.

I am a First-Class Honours BSc Chemistry graduate from 2019, and the founder of the Gement Group of Companies. My business includes Gement GO!, Gement Recruit, and Gement Connect, all of which focus on the built environment and related industries. Through these companies, I am committed to enhancing talent acquisition and retention in the sector, addressing key workforce challenges, and contributing to the industry's long-term growth.

How did you come up with the idea, and what problem does it address?

My final-year thesis focused on the atomic structure of cement, exploring how various additives can enhance its properties and how manipulating the structure can yield specific outcomes. I also investigated green, and net-zero cement solutions to support sustainable construction practices. My research revealed significant gaps in diversity, innovation, support, and regulation within the construction industry. Motivated by these findings, I began developing solutions to address some of these pressing challenges.

What inspired you to pursue entrepreneurship while or after your education at Queen Mary?

Seeing an urgent problem that few seemed to be addressing, I felt driven to create meaningful change in an industry often overshadowed by misconceptions but with vast potential for improvement. Queen Mary University of London provided incredible support, particularly through programs like QIncubator. The advisers in the Enterprise department also offered invaluable, tailored one-on-one guidance, which was instrumental in helping me bring my idea to life.

How do you deal with fear, doubts?

When it comes to dealing with fear and doubt, I focus on small wins and remind myself that everyone stumbles; the key is to bounce back quickly and keep moving forward.

How have you used entrepreneurship for positive social change, and what impact have you seen in your community or industry, if any?

Across our three branches we have supported over 8,000 people who are working in the construction industry or thinking about working in the construction industry. As a company, we have directly improved innovation, support and incentives to work in the construction industry.

What advice would you give to current students or recent graduates who are interested in pursuing entrepreneurship?

Take risks early, be open to learning from anyone, and stay flexible. Build a network, ask for help, and remember that persistence is everything.
