Professor Duncan Matthews, Chair of Intellectual Property Law and Director of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute, was invited to speak at the University of São Paulo Law School in June 2019 on the relationship between competition law, patents and pharmaceutical innovation.
Whilst he was there, he hosted an alumni dinner reception for 17 alumni. Professor Matthews commented:
“It was noticeable how impressive the legal careers of our alumni have been in Brazil. It was amazing to bring so many successful students from different years of our LLM programme at CCLS together, particularly as many hadn’t met each other before. I had taught half of the group so it was a great opportunity to see them again.
The event showed the strength of our LLM across a range of specialisms as we had alumni present from arbitration, banking, insurance, taxation and IP. It was striking and notable that we have a strong presence of different sectors of commercial law in São Paulo which is the legal centre of Brazil”.
Special thanks to Angélica Garcia (2007), who was our link in locating and liaising with the venue for the reunion.
We plan to set up a Brazil Chapter in the coming weeks, so if you are interested, please let the CCLS Alumni team know at ccls-alumni@qmul.ac.uk.
