Danai Spentzou (Human Rights Law LLM, 2020) has recently started a new job as an Accredited Parliamentary Assistant to Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Mr. Stelios Kympouropoulos.

This is what Danai said about her new job:

“In this role I am conducting research on policy issues and regulatory structures, and observing EU legislative developments. I am attending technical meetings, making suggestions for amendments, and drafting reports and speeches. I am also attending conferences, contacting institutional officials, and lobbying with other stakeholders. Part of my daily tasks is to manage a huge number of correspondence and public relations issues.

My MEP is member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), Committee on the Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL), Committee of Petitions (PETI), Committee on Regional Development (REGI), Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI). I therefore am involved with several topics, but I am mostly engaged with human rights, health and environmental issues.

In addition, my MEP is the co-chair of the Disability Intergroup in the European Parliament and thus I have the opportunity to engage with disability rights advocacy, and to organise events and webinars to ensure promotion of disability rights, social inclusion, de-institutionalization, and the right to independent living in the EU. We are also meeting with several organisations fighting to secure the rights of those suffering from rare diseases and mental health issues. Our aim is to promote and guarantee early diagnosis, easy access to treatment and innovative research. (Organisations involved: MHE, EDF, EFPIA, MEP Alliance for Rare Diseases).

Moreover, our office is involved with the following delegations: DMAS (relations with the Mashreq countries), DMED (Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean Substitute),  and D-IN (relations with India). In that context, I usually participate in meetings with National Government’s representatives or Ambassadors, and exchange views and ideas while strengthening the relationship of the EU with third countries.”
