Gary MillerHonorary Senior FellowProfileProfileGary's 47 years of experience in international dispute resolution lies at the heart of his ability to help international businesses resolve their legal and commercial problems which arise when doing business overseas. Having qualified in the UK as a solicitor, Gary left the UK in 1977 to live and work in HK where he spent the next 13 years as a HK lawyer helping both domestic and international clients deal with the legal and commercial issues they faced both in Asia and elsewhere. Gary's philosophy was and still is to provide clients with holistic solutions to their business problems rather than simply provide them with legal advice. Most of the issues that Gary deals with are not simply legal issues. They often require a multi disciplined approach involving investigation, due diligence, cultural awareness, negotiation and developing tailor made strategies to achieve clients' objectives. Gary has spent the majority of his career selecting professionals from various disciplines and various countries and bringing their knowledge and skills together to provide clients with the best possible solution to their problems. A majority of Gary's work does not even touch the UK jurisdiction but as a result of his international exposure and familiarity with a variety of legal systems and cultures, he is able to understand intuitively which professionals and skills are required in which countries to bring about a successful resolution of his clients' problems. Selecting a team of diverse professionals and blending their skill sets and personalities in such a way as to get the best out of them is what Gary does best. Gary is also a skilled negotiator and is often retained by clients who prefer not to, or because of their existing business relationships are unable to, utilise legal proceedings to resolve disagreements or disputes. In these cases Gary will structure the legal and commercial environment in such a way that the client achieves what they want by clever negotiation strategies rather than by legal proceedings. Since returning to the UK in 1989 Gary has focussed particularly on assisting clients based in Asia resolving their international problems and working closely with inhouse Counsel to construct the right strategy to provide clients with a successful outcome to whatever problems they face. Understanding the cultural and behavioural dynamics of the individuals behind the corporate bodies involved on the other side of dispute is a critical part of Gary's ability to outthink and out manoeuvre the opposition. Gary also strongly believes in giving back. He sits as a Trustee on the Board of one of the UK's leading Anti-People Trafficking Charities, Stop The Traffik and is also an Honorary Senior Fellow at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies of Queen Mary University of London where Gary lectures on International Asset Recovery. In 1994 Gary founded the International Fraud Group which is a network of lawyers specialising in international asset recovery.Research
