Mateo Acosta Rubio

Underwriting Performance Associate at Lloyd’s of London

"I graduated from CCLS in 2018, completing a dissertation on Insurance Linked Securities, for which I was awarded a distinction. This research would later launch my career in the Lloyd’s insurance market.

I knew that the London insurance market was second to none. Thanks to the skills and network I managed to build throughout my LLM programme, and most importantly, my dissertation supervisor Miriam Goldby, who encouraged me to conduct my research in this area, guiding me through the process with unrivalled expertise and kindness, I acheived what seemed like an unreachable goal of working in the core of the London insurance market.

Due to the novelty of my research and Miriam’s network, I was chosen to be a research intern at Lloyd’s of London, only 6 months after starting my LLM. It is also thanks to Miriam and CCLS that I am now an Associate of Lloyd’s of London, the regulatory arm of the Lloyd’s insurance market, where I lead the oversight and regulation of political risks, trade credit and financial guarantee insurance, and where I deliver thought-leadership and insights to Lloyd’s market participants, to enhance their financial performance."

Renata Veras Fontes Benning

International Shipping Law LLM (2016)
Claims Executive at Gard UK Ltd

“There were several factors that led me to choose Queen Mary for my LLM in International Shipping Law, but the main ones were the variety of subjects offered by the programme and the opportunity to be close to the London market.

The course is very well organised and structured. The lecturers and professors are extremely knowledgable and the access to learning material and resources is excellent.

Throughout the year we had a very good combination of theoretical and practical lectures, and received a good number of guest lecturers from the various areas of the maritime industry, which gave us a very good opportunity for networking. In fact, through one of those guest lecturers I managed to secure an internship at one of the major P&I Clubs which eventually led me to a permanent position – and I could not be happier about the path my career has taken. The course challenged me in many ways and the amount of support provided by the University equipped me with the tools I needed to succeed. I am very grateful to Queen Mary University for pushing me to become a better professional - and as a bonus, for also providing me with a lot of fond memories during my LLM.”
