Sophia Villalta Chong (Laws LLM, Class of 2025)

"That dream, which once seemed so distant, became a reality with that news. Without this scholarship, it would have been much harder to pursue my studies with the same ease. Thanks to the scholarship, I’ve been able to focus on my studies and fully enjoy the professional, cultural, and social experiences that come with a master’s program, without the constant worry of financial concerns."

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your background/family?

Before joining the CCLS, I worked at a regional firm based in Costa Rica, specializing in Dispute Resolution and Arbitration. I was employed at this firm for 10 years—7 years as an associate and 3 years prior to that as a legal assistant. During this time, I was also actively involved with two non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting alternative dispute resolution in Costa Rica and Latin America, where I developed and led projects aimed at achieving this goal. I continue to participate in one of these organizations, contributing to the organization of an international arbitration competition.

Why did you choose CCLS and being in London?

My passion for arbitration inspired me to pursue studies at one of the world’s leading institutions in the field, such as Queen Mary. I chose the Master of Laws program at CCLS for its high academic standards, outstanding teaching, and the opportunity to engage with its dynamic research community during my studies. Additionally, the program offers flexibility, enabling me to tailor my career path according to my interests and professional goals.

For instance, this term, my modules include Investment Treaty Arbitration, E-commerce Transactions, and International Investment Law. In the later stages of the program, I will take courses in International Construction Contracts and Dispute Resolution, Legal Tech, and Advocacy in Commercial Disputes, among others. The program’s interdisciplinary approach allows me to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to evaluate, address, and prevent complex issues from various perspectives.

How were things before you received the funding?

Deciding to pursue my master’s degree was a challenging decision, as it meant leaving my job, losing my salary, relocating to another country, and facing high living costs. When I received the email inviting me to apply for the Roy Goode Scholarship, I had already made up my mind to study at CCLS, but it was still a difficult choice because funding is a major concern for international students. I remember the process being very stressful, and at times, it felt like a dream that seemed hard to achieve.

How did you feel when you heard you got the funding and has it made an impact for you? If so, in what way?

When I received the news that I had been awarded the scholarship, I cried tears of joy. I vividly remember the moment I read the email. I knew it was an incredibly competitive scholarship, and that only two people would be chosen. Being one of them filled me with pride and immense gratitude. I took a deep breath, and tears of happiness started to fall down my cheeks. That dream, which once seemed so distant, became a reality with that news.

Without this scholarship, it would have been much harder to pursue my studies with the same ease. Thanks to the scholarship, I’ve been able to focus on my studies and fully enjoy the professional, cultural, and social experiences that come with a master’s program, without the constant worry of financial concerns. Receiving the scholarship played a pivotal role in my decision to come and study here. It cleared the path to London and gave me complete confidence in my choice.

Do you think financial worries weigh heavily on students?

For many students I speak to, particularly those from Latin America, funding is a major concern. As a result, students from less privileged backgrounds often have to wait until later in life—sometimes in their late 20s or even older—to pursue their studies abroad. Many are forced to delay their education to save money and take loans to fund their studies. Those who receive financial support, such as a scholarship, are usually deeply grateful, as it is incredibly stressful to face a situation where there are no financial resources available to cover both tuition and living expenses.

What are your plans for the future?

I am committed to using the knowledge I gain to contribute to the development of my country and region, with alternative dispute resolution methods as a key tool. People often have greater access to the internet than to justice. Judicial efficiency is essential for attracting foreign investment and for fostering democracy and peaceful societies. Lengthy and costly litigation can deter foreign investment, while alternative dispute resolution offers a powerful tool for preventing and resolving conflicts efficiently and quickly.

After completing my master’s degree, I will be equipped to handle complex and sophisticated cases, applying both common law and civil law principles to ensure access to justice for individuals, investors, and companies. Well-established and effective ADR systems are closely linked to a country’s stability, improving its reputation as an attractive destination for foreign investment and business. My ultimate goal is to contribute as much as I can to these efforts.

What would you like to say to those that donated to provide these awards?

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the incredible opportunity I now have to study at CCLS. This scholarship has been instrumental in helping me achieve my professional development goals. Supporting and contributing to the Roy Goode Scholarship provides a valuable platform for other students to have the same opportunity—the chance to study in one of the best cities in the world and realize their full potential. It has made a significant impact on me and will continue to benefit future students
