The focus of our research and teaching is the care of patients who have or are at risk of acute life-threatening (critical) illness.
This includes patients undergoing major surgery, patients with severe infection (sepsis), and victims of major trauma. We see these acute illnesses not only as an immediate threat to life but also as a cause of deterioration in long-term health both through chronic diseases such as kidney disease and heart failure and the development of acquired functional disability.
Tim Martin introduces us to the world-class critical care and peri-operative medicine research carried out by the Group and highlights the efforts involved in maintaining high quality research which focusses on improving patient care.
