Trial synopsis

Full title: A national perioperative platform trial to improve outcomes for surgical patients (PROTECT)

This is a Platform trial for the delivery of multi-centre randomised and non-randomised comparisons for adult patients undergoing surgery. The trial has phases II to IV depending on the specific research question. 

Study setting will cover Surgical services of NHS hospitals including patients aged 18 years and over being treated on an NHS surgical care pathway.  

PROTECT will include a range of standard patient outcomes common to all trial questions provided they are applicable. The key patient outcomes will include

  1. Days alive and at home at 30 days after surgery (DAH30) 
  2. Mortality at 30 and 90 days after surgery 
  3. Quality of Life (EQ-5D-5L) at 30 and 90 days after surgery 

Designed to run for at least ten years, PROTECT is an ambitious trial with the aim to accommodate multiple specific research questions.
