8 million surgical procedures are carried out in the UK every year.
Today the surgical population is increasingly older and many will have existing medical conditions. Far from being replaced by new drug therapies, surgery is being offered to more patients than every before. The overarching aim of our research group is to identify patients at risk of complications after surgery and to develop new treatments to improve the care of patients undergoing surgical procedures.
The three areas of perioperative medicine research our group focusses on is the high-risk surgical patient, myocardial injury and postoperative pulmonary complications.
