Jacques Rancière is one of the most important French philosophers of the recent decades. A student of Louis Althusser, Rancière has moved beyond his initial historiographical studies of worker movements to offer an original and path-breaking view of politics, democracy and aesthetics. In concise and often polemical writings that combine history, politics, literary theory, arts, pedagogy and film, Rancière’s thinking challenges traditional disciplinary boundaries. His work has received wide critical attention, but no comprehensive study exists so far that reflects its wider implications for law and socio-legal studies. The main aim of this workshop is to rethink law through Rancière. That is, we are not interested solely in the views of law underlying his thought (law in Rancière), but in those that his thought may open up (law through Rancière). We believe that while his ideas may be used to criticize the shortcomings of law and the injustices of current socio-legal practices, Rancière’s work may also be fruitfully used to explore possibilities of law that are, or remain, invisible. The workshop brings together scholars from different areas of law, critical theory, philosophy and socio-cultural studies.
