Non-Human Rights Data Base
The Non-Human Rights Database is a pioneering research resource developed as part of Dr Alexis Alvarez-Nakagawa's British Academy-funded research project.
The database compiles legislation and case law from international and local jurisdictions—including nation-states and Indigenous Nations—that recognise rights for non-human entities, such as animals, rivers, ecosystems, AI, and machines. It also includes cases where non-human entities are granted special legal status, even if not full rights. While still a work in progress, the database aspires to serve as an expanding resource for legal professionals, scholars, and activists working in the emerging field of non-human rights.
Details
The resources in the database are organised by type (legislation, judgments) and jurisdiction (international and local). These categories are further subdivided to facilitate ease of use. Most resources are presented in their original language, but we provide English translations when available. When original legislation, case law, or projects are unavailable, we offer alternative documents, such as press articles, to provide relevant context. Although the database contains a substantial number of cases, it is not intended to be exhaustive. If you are aware of any missing resources, please contact us, and we will consider adding them to the database.
