Haptics

In 2022, the Institute of Dentistry invested over £1.8m in the latest, cutting edge haptic dental trainers.  

We have the most Simodont dental trainers in the world - 42!  The machines are split between two haptics clinics at the dental hospital in Whitechapel, Haptics clinic 1, located on the 3rd floor has 22 dental trainers, and Haptics Clinic 2, located on the 5th floor has 16 machines. We also have 1 at our outreach centre Kenworthy Road.  

Haptics training has been integrated into both our undergraduate and postgraduate curricula:

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery Year 1 / BSc Oral Health Year 1 - Fine Motor Skills, Manual Dexterity, Anatomy
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery Year 2 / BSc Oral Health Year 2 – Cariology, Ideal Cavity prep, Direct / Indirect Vision Cavity prep, Anterior approximal cavity prep
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery Year 3 / BSc Oral Health Year 3– Endodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery Year 4 / 5 – Development of custom rare cases, custom curriculum based on LiftUpp data (future)

Simulation at the Institute of Dentistry:

  • Integral part of clinical competency-based dental curriculum
  • Phantom head and artificial teeth used in traditional dental simulation training
  • Simulation-based mannequins - ergonomically accurate
  • Learning environment enhances the teaching, learning and practise of motor skills and precision
