“The future of Dental Research in the UK and Beyond”

 


 

Caries Research: Marie-Charlotte Huysmans is the current professor of Cariology and Endodontology at the Department of Dentistry at the Radboudumc, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She has published widely in the field of cariology, tooth wear and restorative dentistry, with more than 175 peer-reviewed papers, and has supervised 23 PhD-candidates Her primary research interests are diagnosis and treatment of secondary caries and tooth wear, and the use of general practice data for treatment evaluation and innovation, and the oral health of patients undergoing haematological cancer treatment. She is the current president of the European Organisation for Caries Research and long-serving associate editor of Caries Research.

Journal of Dental Research: Nick Jakubovics is Professor of Oral Microbiology at Newcastle University, UK and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research. His research is focused on the oral microbiome and biofilms, with the goal of identifying new approaches to control biofilm-related health problems. He has worked in the field for over 20 years and has published more than 100 papers in international journals. Nick was a member of the Executive Board of the Society for Applied Microbiology from 2013-2016, and was Features Editor of their quarterly magazine, The Microbiologist, for several years. He became Associate Editor at Oral Diseases in 2016 and subsequently the Journal of Dental Research in 2017, before being appointed Editor-in-Chief of the JDR in 2020. As part of this role, he is member of the Boards of Directors of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR).

British Dental Journal: Stephen Hancock has been Editor-in-Chief of the BDJ  since 2004. He is a dentist, writer, editor, publisher and performer and also owns his own publishing business. He was appointed OBE in 1997 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to the dental profession and subsequently has been awarded Honorary Membership of the British Dental Association, the American Dental Association and a place in the prestigious FDI’s List of Honour. He has an MA from the Central School of Speech and Drama, London in Advanced Theatre Practice and is also well known for chairing, lecturing and after-dinner speaking as well starting a series on YouTube entitled Let's Go Gardening.

Dental Materials: David Watts is Professor of Biomaterials Science in the School of Medical Sciences and the Photon Science Institute at the University of Manchester. He has served 25 years, since 1998, as Editor-in-Chief of Dental Materials - Journal for oral and craniofacial biomaterials sciences, published by Elsevier on behalf of the Academy of Dental Materials. Prior to that he was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Dentistry. From 1986-2011 he served as a UK Principal Expert to International Standards Organization Technical Committee 106 (Dentistry), on ceramics, composite materials, adhesion and photo-polymerization. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Biology and the Academy of Dental Materials.

Archives of Oral Biology: Fionnuala Lundy is a Principal Investigator in the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, and Director of Education for Postgraduate Taught Programmes in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, Queen’s University Belfast.  Fionnuala is a long-standing member of the Irish Division of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and has served the division as Councillor, Treasurer and President.  Fionnuala is recognised internationally for her role in IADR has been President of the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group (2019-2020), Group Programme Chair for the IADR conference in Vancouver (2019) and Pan European Region (PER) President from 2020-2022. Fionnuala was awarded the IADR/GlaxoSmithKline Innovation in Oral Care Award on two occasions; as Principal Investigator and as Co-investigator. In 2021, Fionnuala received the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for her contribution to the field of Pulp Biology and Regeneration. Having served as Associate Editor of the Archives of Oral Biology (2016-2020), Fionnuala is now Editor-in-Chief of the journal (2020-present). Fionnuala is the first female Editor-in-Chief of the Archives of Oral Biology since the establishment of the journal in 1959.

Community Dentistry Oral Epidemiology: Sarah Baker is Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry in the School of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Sheffield, and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. Professor Baker has been Editor-in-Chief of Community Dentistry Oral Epidemiology, the flagship international journal in the fields of community dentistry, dental public health, oral epidemiology and dental health services research, since 2021. Before her appointment as Editor-in-Chief, she was an Associate Editor for 10 years. She is also an Editorial Board member for the journals Community Dental Health and Evidence-Based Dentistry. Professor Baker is the first female Editor-in-Chief for Community Dentistry Oral Epidemiology in its 50 year history, and the first social scientist to become Editor-in-Chief of one of the 91 JCR-listed Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine journals. Her appointment is an acknowledgment of the ever-increasing proportion of women in oral and dental research, together with the important role of social and behavioural sciences in dentistry. In her role, Professor Baker works to promote the values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in academic publishing in dentistry, as well as championing these values and interdisciplinarity in oral and dental research more broadly.  Professor Baker is a Past President of the Behavioural, Epidemiologic Health Services Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), and recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Behavioural, Epidemiological and Health Services Research in 2018.
