Odont. from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Oslo, in 1977. He worked as a military dental officer and as general dentist until he started his training in oral surgery at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Odense, Denmark in 1981. He did his postgraduate training in pharmacology and toxicology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Oslo, 1983-86 with DrSci (Pharmacology) received in 1986 at the same place. He worked as clinical instructor in oral surgery and oral medicine and as research fellow in clinical pharmacology/pharmacotherapy and received scholarship from The Norwegian Association of Pharmaceutical Industries in 1990. He worked as a staff exchange officer at the Department of Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Nairobi, Kenya, in 1986. He received his GDC UK authorization as a specialist in oral surgery in 2009 and holds specialist authorization as an oral surgeon in Denmark and Sweden, and as specialist in oral surgery and oral medicine in Norway.He became Professor of pharmacology at the Section of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Oslo in 1996 where he currently holds this position. He received his PG certificate in Sedation and Pain Management from the University College London in 2010, and Diploma of Sedation and Pain Control from the University of the Western Cape, SA, in 2011. He received his fellowship FDS RCS (England) in 2010, and the Medal for Long and Faithful Service, The Royal Norwegian Society for Development, 2014.He also works as a senior consultant (research) at the Department of Maxillofacial surgery, Oslo University Hospital (UllevÄl), course leader (CPD course) University College London, visiting Professor (hon) at the University of Manchester for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery programme. His teaching experience ranges from dental hygienists, veterinary, medical, and dental students, to specific postgraduate courses for dentists training as oral surgeons.
