Dr Lochana Nanayakkara is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry working for Barts Health NHS Trust and a Honorary Senior Lecturer at QMUL School of Medicine and Dentistry. Lochana is Director of Dental Education at BartsHeath and Co- Director of the DClinDent programme in Prosthodontics. Lochana also works part-time as a Specialist Prosthodontist in a Specialist Private Practice, Plowman and Partners. She is also a Convenor of Dental Education at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. 

Lochana is committed to providing the highest possible standard of care for patients and have invested a significant proportion of my professional life to the teaching and training of dentists, NHS trainees, postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Lochana has been the the Faculty Development Lead for the Royal London Dental Hospital since 2009. Since 2018, this position was incorporated into the role of Director of Dental Education for BartsHealth.

She was Training Programme Director for Restorative Specialty Training for London and South East England (2014-2019) and the Dental Core Training (DCT) Programme Director for North East London (2009-2019) for Health Education England, responsible for ensuring the quality management and effective delivery of training for these two groups of NHS Trainees.

World Federation of Haemophilia, Dental Committee positions as Western European Representative (2012- 2014) , Secretary (2014-2018), Vice Chair (2018 - 2020). Very proud to have been elected as Chair of the Dental Committee in 2020 and again in 2022.

Lochana is the Dental Lead for the North London Adult Haemophilia Network (2014 - present)

Lochana is the Restorative Lead for the Endocarditis Multi-Disciplinary Team at Barts Heart Centre.

Lochana has a special interest in the dental management of patients with haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. She has been investigating the use of Pre-operative Low Level Laser Diode to reduce the intra operative and post operative bleeding experience of patients with rare bleeding disorders affecting primary Haemostasis. In 2019 she gained a Fellowship in Lasers in Dentistry by the University of Genoa and UCL.

Lochana has committed to improving access to dental surveillance and treatment for patients diagnosed with Infective Endocarditis to help reduce the risk of recurrent disease from oral pathogens.

In 2020/2021 Lochana has led the local service evaluations to trial Rapid Point of Care testing to increase capacity for Covid safe aerosol generating procedures in open plan teaching clinics.
