Profile

Professor Chong's professional career combines clinical practice with teaching, scholarship and research. He is a General Dental Council (UK) registered Specialist in Endodontics and involved with the education and training of dentists and future specialists. He is the Programme Lead, MSc. in Endodontic Practice and since 1990, also in specialist private practice limited to endodontics in central London. He was previously associated with Guy's, now part of King's College London, for over 22 years.

Professor Chong qualified as a dentist from University College London. He was awarded his MSc. in Endodontics (with distinction) followed by his PhD from Guy's Hospital. Research studies on endodontic surgery by Professor Chong and his co-workers were recognised as forming part of the body of evidence and relevant literature on the subject. In addition, he is a Lead Developer, Case Difficulty Assessment Tool for Endodontics (EndoApp), which has been adopted by the British Endodontic Society.

Professor Chong was President of the British Endodontic Society (2017-2018) and, from 2006-2020, an Editor-in-Chief (UK) of ENDO – Endodontic Practice Today, an international endodontic journal for general dental practitioners including specialists in endodontics. He is the Editor and a contributing author of two editions of Harty’s Endodontics in Clinical Practice and the author of Managing Endodontic Failure in Practice. In addition, he contributed to five other textbooks (Principles of Endodontics, Endodontic Advances and Evidence-Based Clinical Guidelines, Endodontic Materials in Clinical Practice, Dentine Hypersensitivity in Clinical Practice, Self-Assessment Picture Tests in Dentistry: Endodontics). He is an Examiner and Visiting Professor, for several, including overseas, universities and Royal Surgical Colleges, and a Lead of the European Society of Endodontology S3 Guidelines Working Group. He is also on the Editorial Advisory Board of the New Zealand Dental Journal and the Editorial Board of the International Endodontic Journal, the official publication of the British Endodontic Society, Danish Endodontic Society, European Society of Endodontology, Flemish Society of Endodontology, Irish Endodontic Society and Lebanese Society of Endodontology.
