Profile

Simon is Professor of Craniofacial Trauma and Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal London Hospital since 2003. He leads the Craniofacial trauma team and specialises totally in the management of facial reconstructive surgery and aesthetics. He has developed the Multidisciplinary Craniofacial Trauma Team which is unique in the field.


His academic commitments are closely related to development of translational research,  specialty training both nationally and internationally

He has introduced numerous new surgical and aesthetic  techniques together with digital treatment planning technologies, and developed a comprehensive and fully integrated approach to facial trauma which has proven both innovative and successful. His major clinical interest is in the management of Complex Cranioorbital reconstruction for which he has an established international reputation.


He has lectured widely nationally and internationally, and is a regular keynote speaker at International Conferences. He has contributed to and edited two major textbooks on craniofacial trauma. One of these was awarded the BMJ Prize for best Surgical Textbook in 2014.  He has published in major anatomical textbooks including Gray’s Anatomy, and Gray’s Atlas of Surgical Anatomy. He has published widely in the Maxillofacial literature, and is  on the editorial review board for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orbit, Injury, and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His research interests are around assessment of severity of injury with development of assessment of outcome tools. He has developed an iPhone App as a craniofacial skeletal fracture severity score calculator.


He is also interested in forensic analysis of facial injuries, as well as developing embedding of facial trauma services in international first aid collaborations.


He has developed and chairs a distance learning MSc course in craniofacial trauma at QMUL. Politically he is active within his specialty - he was previously the nominated facial trauma lead for BAOMS, and a member of AO UK Craniofacial.
