Title: A View From Somewhere: Data, Bias, and Representation
Abstract: In this talk, Jerone Andrews will present approaches to addressing bias and privacy concerns in AI systems through responsible data practices, bias detection and mitigation, and human-centric representation learning. Drawing on his work at Sony AI, Jerone will explore how these areas are key to ensuring AI adheres to ethical standards and societal values. He will highlight three key papers from his research, covering responsible data curation, reducing bias in AI models, and making AI representations more reflective of human perception. This presentation will provide insights into building more responsible AI.
Bio: Jerone Andrews is a Research Scientist at Sony AI, where he leads a team focused on responsible data curation, bias detection and mitigation, and representation learning. His work has been r ecognised with awards such as the ICML 2024 Best Paper Award and the ECCV 2024 Best Paper Candidate Award, and he has contributed to patents and open-source projects.
Jerone holds a Ph.D. and MRes in Computer Science from University College London, where his research was funded by the EPSRC, and an MSci in Mathematics from King’s College London. His early career included a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship and a British Science Association Media Fellowship with BBC Future. He has also been a Visiting Researcher at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo and Telefónica Research in Barcelona.
