Introducing ‘CARE Digital Education’

Our new self-paced online course for FMD staff offers an opportunity to explore good practice and develop skills in designing for online learning.

Teaching online calls for a different approach than in-person teaching. The online learning environment has different affordances and challenges than campus environments, we interact differently with information online and online learners themselves often have different needs and circumstances than on-campus learners. It can however, be difficult to visualise what online learning experiences should and could look like if it is the first time redesigning your module for online learning.

The CARE Digital Education course is designed to introduce you to some of the big ideas and theories underpinning digital learning design, while modelling good practice principles – so you can experience online learning as a learner. We have also shared a number of templates and guides to help you apply these guidelines to your own online teaching practice.

The course is divided into three main topics:

  • Why does digital education matter?

This topic explores the rationale for the Faculty's investment in creating excellent digital learning experiences for all our students, and introduces the Digital Education Studio and the CARE Agenda, our Faculty approach to digital education.

  • What does excellent digital education look like?

This topic introduces some good practice guidelines for digital learning and the key concepts and ideas that underpin them.

  • How do we do this in practice?

This topic covers practical strategies and techniques to enhance digital education in the Faculty.

It is designed so that you can either work through the course sequentially, or jump straight to the section that best suits your needs. It is self-paced, so you can work through it in your own time and according to your needs and interests.
