Recommendations for Reasonable Adjustments

The Disability and Dyslexia Service act as a point of contact between the student and the remainder of the university, including the Department, School and Institute that the student is based in. This means that we communicate regularly with Student Support Officers and Managers based in the university’s Schools and Institutes, as well as with relevant academic colleagues. 

This would include recommending Reasonable Adjustments, such as (please note this is not exhaustive, and we would be happy to discuss your specific requirements):

  • Access to lecture notes in advance
  • Timetabling Adjustments
  • Access to assistive technology
  • Coursework-related recommendations 
  • Attendance Concerns (periodic/ongoing)
  • Access to regular breaks
  • Regular contact with the student from DDS
  • Access to QMUL's rest and recuperation room
  • Implementation human support (e.g. note-takers / BSL interpreters)
  • Library Support
  • Examination Access Arrangements, e.g. additional time. 

Non-Specialist Human Support

The Disability and Dyslexia Service can provide assistance with arranging Non-Specialist Human Support (as it is known through the Disabled Students' Allowances) including note-takers, readers, library assistants and campus support workers.  We will also help you if you need to arrange for the transcription of course materials into Braille, large print, audio or electronic format.  

In addition to our own pool of Non-Specialist Human Support Workers we can also liaise with other institutions and specialist organisations to ensure that students receive appropriate human support.

Specialist Assistive Technology Rooms

QMUL has three dedicated resource rooms for disabled students: one in the library at the Mile End campus which was recently enlarged, one in the School of Law at the Lincoln's Inn Fields campus and one in the Francis Bancroft Building. Rooms contain a number of networked PCs, screenreading and magnification software and other hardware aimed at the disabled users including an HD CCTV, and electrically-operated height adjustable desks.

In addition, the text-to-speech program ClaroRead Plus and the mindmapping tool MindView are networked across the Teaching Service, which is available to all QMUL students.

Loan equipment

If students are not eligible for funding to cover the cost of a full package of specialist equipment (e.g. Disabled Students' Allowances), they may be able to borrow specialist items from us while studying here.  If you are waiting to establish eligibility or for funding to be arranged, you may also borrow equipment whilst your eligibility is being confirmed.

Parking for Blue Badge Holders

Parking is extremely limited on campus. Students who are Blue Badge holders can access on-site parking for a fixed period in QMUL car parks. Unfortunately, no parking is available for non blue-badge holders.  If you are not currently a blue-badge holder and wish to apply, you can find more information about how to do so herePlease contact the Disability and Dyslexia Service for further information.

Unfortunately, QMUL cannot guarantee a parking space as these are limited and subject to availability.  More information for blue badge holders parking within Tower Hamlets is available here.

Timetabling Adjustments

QMUL can offer timetabling adjustments to those students who require this due to a disability or medical condition.  An application can be made at any time during your course as required - once an application has been made you will not need to re-apply each year unless you wish to make changes.  If you declare a disability during application or enrolment you will be sent a link to the Timetabling Adjustments application form.  You can also find links in Mysis and the QMUL App.

Once the form has been submitted the information will be sent to the Timetabling Team for them to make the requested amendments to your timetable, where possible. The Timetabling team will action the adjustments up to the start of term (normally the first week in September). After this date the adjustments will be passed on to your School, and implemented by them where possible.  

Examination Access Arrangements

Students with disabilities and specific learning differences can request Reasonable Adjustments for examinations.  These include additional time, ergonomic seating, an amanuensis, or ‘scribe’, a reader, exam papers in enlarged font or alternative formats and specialist equipment.
