Internal Funding opportunities for current students

There are numerous funding opportunities for current students at Queen Mary. There are two Queen Mary funds that are open to all our postgraduate research students: the Queen Mary Doctoral College Initiative Fund (DCIF) and the Queen Mary Postgraduate Research Fund (PGRF). Many schools and institutes also offer a range of extra funding to their students so make sure you check your school/institute’s website for further information.

Students from the School of Medicine and Dentistry can also apply to the School’s Travel Fund for PhD Students and Postdoctoral Researchers. Awards are available to contribute to the travel costs of postgraduate research students attending conferences and courses.

External Funding opportunities for current students

As a PGR student at Queen Mary, you have access to databases to help you source additional funding, including The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding and Research Professional. Details on how to access each database are given below.

Queen Mary has a subscription to the Alternative Guide for Postgraduate Funding, which promotes funding opportunities from non-traditional funding sources, such as charities, for any postgraduate student studying in the UK, regardless of subject or nationality.

To access the Alternative Guide, visit the Alternative Guide gateway page and follow the instructions below.

Using the Alternative Guide for the first time:

  1. Scroll down to see the green ‘Register for personal username/password’ box.
  2. Use option 1: I’m a Current Student or staff member and enter your QM email address in the ‘University Email’ box.
  3. Then click ‘Go!’
  4. Check your email account for your login details. Be sure to check your junkmail or spam box if you don’t see the email in your inbox.
  5. Return to the gateway page and use the blue ‘Login Now!’ box to fill in your User Name and Password.
  6. Click ‘Login’ to login the Guide.

 

Returning user:

Use the blue ‘Login Now!’ box to fill in your User Name and Password or login automatically if you are on campus and connected to the QM network.

 

Research Professional is one of the most comprehensive research funding databases available. Queen Mary has a site subscription to the database. Simply go to the website from any Queen Mary campus or virtual terminal and create a Research Professional account, or search the database as a guest. Once you have created an account you can access Research Professional from anywhere. Guest access is restricted to Queen Mary terminals.

Your database search can be customised in the following ways:

  • by searching for a specific word or phrase.
  • by discipline.
  • by award type (eg thesis/dissertation awards, travel funding, postdoctoral fellowships).
  • by funder (eg a specific research council, charity or trust).
  • by closing date.
  • by award type.
  • through the ‘More options’ drop down menu.

You can download and email yourself your results as a text summary, with all the important links included.
