A Collaborative and Competition-Based Learning Approach for Enhanced Student Engagement and Performance

Conventional lectures without engagement are not always quite effective in facilitating learning, and students often lose their learning interest in these eventless sessions. A solution to this could be creating an active learning environment by incorporating cooperative and interactive activities in conventional lectures. Live/Online Student Response Systems(OSRS) are excellent tools to serve that purpose. In this paper, a collaborative learning approach for enhanced learning experience and performance by using OSRS from different perspectives has been explored. The aim is to illustrate that this method can provide a complementary pedagogical approach to the traditional didactic lecture format and offer greater class engagement, improved learning outcomes, higher attendance rates, and higher student satisfaction when applied in different delivery setups in pre-covid, during covid, and post-covid classroom environments.

Attendance Improvement:


The graph illustrates that after the announcement of the activity in the first week, students’ attendance at the live lecture increased significantly during Covid. Whereas the attendance of other modules from the same year of study and from the same programme kept going low. 

Survey:


Almost 79% of the year-4 students (pre-covid) liked the live interactive session. The percentages are 73% for year-3 students (online delivery) and 63% for year-2 students.

Progress:

The paper of this study has been accepted at the IEEE EDUCON 2024. The author diligently carried out this activity and collected data over a period exceeding four years.
