Five students from EECS have been awarded equity-free funding from Queen Mary University for their business ideas.
The Enterprise team at Queen Mary are dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship at Queen Mary, offering funding opportunities, a series of informative programmes and events, and one-to-one appointments to support all students to help bring their business ideas to life.
All students from Queen Mary, and those who have graduated less than two years ago are eligible to apply for funding to help grow their business. Up to £10,000 in equity-free awards are available, available in four separate award categories: Try It, Build It, Launch It and Grow It.
Try It Awards help people who have an idea for a social or commercial enterprise they’d like to create, offering up to £500 of funding to help test the concept, whilst Build It Awards offer up to £10,000 to develop a prototype, such as an app, website or physical prototype. Launch It Awards offer up to £3,000 for students hoping to launch their product or service, whereas Grow It Awards are aimed at those already with a business who want to grow their impact.
Students Tolga Karabacak and Quam Bisade Ogunwoolu were awarded a £500 Try It Award towards their enterprise, Glissandro, a free-to-use mobile app for music tutors to connect with their students.
Fares Azhari was also awarded a £500 Try It Award for Cut.it.co.uk – a user driven Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) business, which provides bespoke cut materials to UK customers with rapid delivery times.
Khizar Malik took home a £3,000 Launch It Award for ChicChic, a mobile beauty marketplace with social media elements, where beauty and wellness professionals can showcase their work and services. The platform allows consumers to browse and book different services in one place, and also provides a supportive and engaging community centred around beauty and wellness.
Finally, Etiene da Cruz Dalcol took home a £500 Try It Award and a £3,000 Launch It Award for Polygloss, a collaborative language learning platform shaped as an image-guessing game. The game is designed to help intermediate level learners improve their communication skills and self-expression in a foreign language by helping to unleash their creativity.
