The following details our general entry requirements which cover most undergraduate programmes but please make sure to also check individual programmes for specific requirements.
We tend to refer to entry requirements in terms of standard British qualifications (e.g. A-levels) however, admissions tutors at Queen Mary are familiar with international qualifications and welcome applications from students with equivalent qualifications.
The admissions information on this web page reflects our current standard admissions criteria (which does change from time to time) and supersedes any information in printed publications.
Our A-level entrance requirements are typically based on 3 A-levels. The standard grades required are:
A: Core subjects |
Maths and further maths; Computer science/computing |
B1: Supporting subject (science and technical) |
Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Economics, Electronics, Physics, Psychology |
B2: Supporting subjects (language skills) |
English Literature, French, German, (Ancient) Greek, History, Latin, Philosophy, Politics, Religious studies, Spanish |
C: Other acceptable subjects |
ICT, Business Studies, Design Technology, Sociology; Especially for Creative Computing: Art, Drama, Music |
For most computer science programmes, we accept a wide range of subjects. We welcome the new Computer Science school curricula (at both GCSE and A-Level), but it is not necessary for you to have learnt programming before starting your degree studies: our first-year programmes cater for all levels of previous experience, from accomplished programmers to complete novices. The skills required to be successful at Computer Science – logical reasoning, problem-solving, resilience – can be developed through many subjects. Mathematics is important: you must meet our minimum requirements but more than this will help you succeed. Verbal reasoning and being able to express yourself in writing is also very important.
These guidelines are not definitive. We consider every application in detail, looking at your full academic record, including GCSEs. If you have written computer programs but not taken exams (for example, at a club) be sure to tell us about this in your personal statement. We make offers to all applicants who we believe will be adequately prepared for our programme, even if the A level subjects do not exactly match our recommendations.
All applicants must meet the minimum requirements in English and Maths. For UK applicants we require English Language GCSE minimum grade C (or 4) and Mathematics GCSE minimum grade B (or 5). We will also accept Core Maths (grade C) to meet the minimum maths requirement instead of GCSE grade B.
Queen Mary University of London welcomes applications from students currently studying Level 3 BTEC qualifications and will consider you for entry to the majority of our undergraduate courses. The typical entry requirements will vary according to the course you are applying for.

Students from non-English-speaking countries normally require IELTS (6.0 average) for admission. For more information on other English Language Qualifications.
Some programmes require maths and science qualifications. Where these subjects are specified in the A-level requirements, they should be included (with at least five points at Higher level). Please see the individual programmes for specific requirements.
You will need an award of EB at 80% or above overall.
Some programmes require maths and science qualifications. Where these subjects are specified in the A-level requirements, they should be included (at grade eight minimum). Please see the individual programmes for specific requirements.
We welcome applicants with EPQ and may make more flexible offers to applicants offering an EPQ; see: the college's central web page for more information on EPQ
We will consider applications on a case by case basis and must be relevant to the programme you are applying for. Please note students should be achieving very high grades in their studies. Entry will normally be to BEng or BSc only.
All applications should be made through UCAS before the 15th January UCAS deadline. Before a decision is made applicants may be invited to a Maths test at Queen Mary.
We consider applicants who have successfully completed their first year at another University, but entry into the second year is not always possible as courses often differ. We may request detailed information about your programme.
