Nabila Nur is studying for a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Industrial Experience at Queen Mary, developing a broad and sought-after portfolio of technical skills.
Why did you choose to study at Queen Mary? Being an international student, I wanted to study in a Russell Group university and shape my future in one of the top UK universities. Being situated in the heart of London, I felt that I could enjoy diversity and cultures of different backgrounds.
What do you enjoy most about your course? As an engineering student, I have to work in the labs. The most important part of my course is getting enough help and resources in the lab. It has always been very important and helpful to work in a learning environment as lab demonstrators are always there to help students with troubleshooting problems.
In my second year we had guest lectures from working professionals and students who went on industry placement. They shared with us tips on how to be successful when applying for a job.
Tell us about your experiences of studying at Queen Mary. When I came to Queen Mary, I was very shy and I had hard time believing in myself. My lecturers noticed this and gave me their time and advice and I can never thank them enough for that. The modules I thought I wouldn't do well enough in, I got a first because of my teachers’ motivation. I would say the lecturers’ support and feedback has really helped me with my studies.
I have been working as a Teaching Assistant in labs where I demonstrate labs for 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students. It has been a very good experience to put on my CV and to build my confidence. Being an undergraduate student is hard and for me, I left my family for the very first time in Bangladesh so it was very difficult for me to cope up. Queen Mary has lots of societies and activities going on that supports students. I got connected with societies and the Draper’s Bar and Kitchen is one of my favourite place to socialise on a Friday night.
Have you used the Careers and Enterprise service? The University has a Careers service that helps students to upgrade their CVs and prepare them for interview. It’s a very good and efficient service and they know how to prepare students for the world.
What do you hope to do when you graduate? As I am working as a lab demonstrator and have experience in industry I am planning to add that into my career as a working professional. I have already had full time offer from some companies and all of my experiences were the reasons for that. Overall, it’s the best experience of my life and I happy that I chose Queen Mary.Learn more about Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Queen Mary.
