Comparative Literature Taster

When: Wednesday, November 2, 2022, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Where: Online

Are you interested in studying literature, and other cultural forms, from around the world? Do you want to explore how texts, narratives and ideas travel across time and space? If so, Comparative Literature is the degree for you!

Taster Session Schedule

5.00pm - Welcome: What is Comparative Literature? Dr. Annabel Cox will explain what makes Comparative Literature such an exciting subject. You’ll discover what makes us so different from English or Modern Languages departments, hear about some of the modules that we offer, learn about our optional year abroad programme and find out where some of our graduates are today.

5.15pm - Case Study: Fairy Tales as the Object of Comparison: some different aspects of a well-known fairy tale will be explored, showing how narratives can travel and adapt over time and to different locations in order to suit new cultural contexts. We will also consider how the genre of the fairy tale has developed. This session will allow you to engage in comparative literature in action, and to compare texts across different linguistic traditions and historical periods.

5.50pm - Q & A: We’ll wrap up by giving you a chance to ask any questions. Dr. Annabel Cox can also tell you more about our entry requirements and what we look for in a personal statement.

This taster session is suitable for Years 10 to 13; no prior knowledge of the subject is necessary.
