In an era where democratic values face unprecedented challenges, the resilience and adaptability of democracies are paramount. To explore the current state of democratic institutions around the world, the Centre for Governance and Democracy and the Mile End Institute have assembled a panel of distinguished experts to delve into the dynamics of modern democracy. We will be examining the dynamics and pressures that modern democracy faces and exploring how to reinforce democratic institutions globally.
Panel:
Prof. Richard Youngs is Senior Fellow in the Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Professor of International Relations at the University of Warwick. Richard has authored 17 books, including his recent book Democratic Crossroads: Transformations in Twenty First-Century Politics (Oxford University Press, 2024).
Sunder Katwala is the director of British Future. He has previously worked as a journalist. He was general secretary of the Fabian Society thinktank from 2003 to 2011, and was previously a leader writer and internet editor at the Observer, a research director of the Foreign Policy Centre and commissioning editor for politics and economics at the publisher Macmillan.
Dr Sofia Collignon is the Director of the Mile End Institute and a Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics at Queen Mary University of London. She is an expert in the study of candidates, elections and gendered violence against political elites, whose research lays in the intersection of elite politics and public opinion.
