Debating Labour's Budget: MEI Teach-In

When: Friday, November 1, 2024, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Arts One 1.28, Mile End

Please note that this event is only open to QMUL students and staff

In the week when the new Labour government announces its first Budget since taking office in July, the Mile End Institute will be holding a 'teach in' for Queen Mary students (and staff) to explore what's in the Budget, who will most benefit from it and what impact it will have on the UK economy.

How will the Government try to fill what the Chancellor has called a £22bn 'black hole' in the public finances? Which taxes will rise and where will cuts in public spending be most keenly felt? How will the anticipated increase in inheritance tax and National Insurance contributions for employers be received? And will the Budget help the Government to get back on track after a difficult summer when many commentators have questioned the Prime Minister and the Chancellor's political nous?

Join our expert panel to get the latest analysis of the contents of the Budget and ask your questions about its impact on British politics and the economy in the year ahead.

Panel:

  • Allie Renison (Associate Director at SEC Newgate and former Policy Adviser to Secretary of State for Business and Trade)
  • Dr Karl Pike (Senior Lecturer in Public Policy and former Labour Political Adviser)
  • Dr Colm Murphy (Lecturer in British Politics and Deputy Director of the MEI)

This event will be held in Room 1.28 in Arts One. It will start at 3pm and last for 1 hour and light refreshments will be served. It is open to all QMUL students and staff but registration is required.
