Patient Voice in Diabetes Research,  June 2018

On June 13th, the Diabetes Complications Research Centre (DCRC) based in UCD together with Diabetes Ireland hosted an event named “Patient Voice in Diabetes Research” organized by Dr Fiona McGillicuddy, Dr Neil Docherty and Prof Catherine Godson. Diabetes patients and their families were invited to join researchers in the diabetes complications field and together discuss how research could better address patient’s needs. Patients groups were asked to address specific questions and responses of these discussions were recorded by rapporteurs from the research community. These questions included how patients could be more involved in research. The feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive and it was a successful night for both sides, as patients enjoyed giving their opinion and felt involved and taken into consideration and on the other side researchers came out with plenty of new ideas and new targets to address.

Barts and Queen Mary Science Festival, June 2017

On the 21st of June our QMUL ESRs took part in the Bart's and Queen Mary Science Festival, held in the Octagon of the Queen's building, at QMUL's Mile End campus. This  free event, was open to the general public but particularly aimed at secondary schools/young people interested in science and medicine. Talks were given by senior and junior scientists and doctors, in addition to hands on activities and displays.

The objective of the festival was to get students interested in research and talk with them about possible careers in science. Silvia, Laura and Monika volunteered in a booth which had a specific theme around inflammation, where they used interactive games and showed the students some easy experiments to get them talking and engaged in science.

At the end of the day, our ESRs were highly impressed by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the young students' and the festival proved once more the importance of science communication and education outreach to increase awareness of ongoing scientific research.
