Athena Swan Charter for Gender Equality

The Athena Swan Charter is a framework used across the world to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE). The Charter was originally established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment. The Charter is now used to address gender equality more broadly. The Charter is run by Advance HE.

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry holds two awards, one for Medicine and one for Dentistry. Details of the awards can be found below: 

Medicine

The Athena Swan gold logo

Since 2023, we have held a Gold Athena Swan award for our five medical institutes. This award lasts until 2028.

Dentistry

In 2024, the Institute of Dentistry received a Silver Athena Swan renewal award. The award lasts until 2029. The awarding panel recommended that the Institute of Dentistry commence work on applying for a Gold award. The redacted version will be uploaded to this page shortly.
