In its first iteration, the Academy was founded in 2013 by Prof Tom MacDonald and Prof Denise Sheer, at completion of an excellent recruitment of early career researchers with the FMD. Four away days were organised in the 2014-2017 period, where the Fellows discussed science and developed projects with the senior management of the FMD. Several joint projects and publications have emerged from these meetings, including the identification of cross-cutting research themes (like epigenetics, inflammation, metabolism) that have benefited the FMD in terms of refining its research strategy and investments.
