INSIGHT Journeys
A collection of profiles and journeys of our current and past INSIGHT scholars.
Fahmida Begum
I applied for the NIHR INSIGHT Programme studentship because of my strong passion for maternal mental health and my dedication to addressing the gaps in our healthcare system. As a newly qualified midwife with over three years of training, I've had the privilege of supporting women during one of the most life-changing experiences they’ll go through. But I've also seen the tough challenges mothers face when dealing with mental health issues, often made worse by stigma and a lack of resources.
Since starting my MSc in Public Mental Health at Queen Mary University of London, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I've been surrounded by people who share the same commitment to improving public mental health, and I’ve loved expanding my research and analytical skills. Every lecture and discussion has strengthened my drive to influence policy and create mental health strategies that can be seamlessly integrated into maternity care. The NIHR INSIGHT Programme is more than just helping me fund my education—it’s giving me the tools to become a leader in maternal mental health advocacy, providing me with research skills, policy knowledge, and the ability to work across disciplines to bring about real change in how care is delivered. This studentship is not just an opportunity for academic growth; it's a stepping stone toward making a lasting difference in how we support mothers' mental health in the UK.
Looking ahead, I’m determined to play a key role in shaping mental health policy and ensuring that maternal mental health becomes a central focus within public health.
