Queen Mary’s Climate Action Week

Queen Mary University of London and the Students' Union are hosting Climate Action Week—a week of events designed to make sustainability accessible and show its relevance across all disciplines.

A week of engaging events run by both students and staff, Climate Action Week offers a space to learn, ask questions, take action, and connect with people across our community. Events will focus on key sustainability themes such as Operations, Research and Innovation, and Education.

From planting your own herbs and clothing repair workshops to exploring the importance of COP with sustainability experts, sustainable finance career panels, canal cleans, and writing letters to the Earth—there is something for everyone.

Academics from the School of Geography will be taking part in key discussions on climate policy, sustainability, and global challenges

  • Beyond COP29: Turning Talk into Action
    Mon 17 Feb, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM, Colette Bowe Room
    Queen Mary experts, including Dr Raymond Ward from the School of Geography, discuss the impact of COP29 and how climate policy translates into real action.
  • Sustainable Careers in Finance
    Mon 17 Feb, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Online
    An insightful and engaging online panel discussion featuring Queen Mary alumni working at the forefront of the green finance and sustainable investment sectors.
  • Walking the Hidden Profits of Climate Destruction
    Wed 19 Feb, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM, City of London
    Professor David Whyte will lead a walking tour through the City of London, taking in key locations that host the British and transnational corporations profiting from West Papua’s environmental destruction.
  • Environmental Struggles in West Papua
    Wed 19 Feb, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Online
    Online seminar will feature Angela Sherwood, Samira Homerang Saunders, and David Whyte from the Centre for Climate Crime and Climate Justice. They will explore the history of West Papua, looking at its colonial past and how it connects to present-day challenges.
  • From Carbon Footprints to Systems Change
    Thurs 20 Feb, 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM, Geography Common Room
    From Carbon Footprints to Regenerative Stories: Discover how the fossil fuel industry created the concept of carbon footprints to shift the blame for emissions onto individuals. A workshop exploring systemic change beyond individual responsibility in climate action.
