Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing

The School of Geography at Queen Mary University of London strives to be a place where every member of our community can thrive and achieve their full potential. 

Our work towards this goal is informed and underpinned by the School’s longstanding commitment to social justice within and beyond academia.

To realise and uphold this collective ambition, we are guided by the following core commitments:

  • to nurture a culture of care amongst staff and students that is anti-discrimination, collegial, and mutually supportive.

  • to foster an environment where individuals feel secure in reporting incidents related to discrimination, harassment, or any form of inequitable treatment.

Guided by these core commitments, the role of the School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee is to:

  • provide accountability for the School’s EDI core commitments.
  • identify strategic EDI priorities for the School based on core commitments.
  • delegate work related to EDI priorities to appropriate School committees.
  • oversee the development, review, and recommendation of EDI policies and interventions.
  • assess systems and process involved with the monitoring and reporting of EDI issues.
  • assist in the identification and organisation of training opportunities.

 

Our School EDI committee

The School's EDI  Committee aims to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion and embed EDI into the norms and culture of the School. The Committee is led by two co-chairs (one academic and one PS staff), currently Dr Elsa Noterman and Shazia Sadiq, and includes representatives of students, academic staff, and Professional Services staff. It monitors EDI data, oversees the implementation of our Athena Swan Action Plan, and explores ways of making teaching and learning equally accessible to all members of the School.
